Kushal Vyas

PhD Student @ RICE University

I am currently a second year PhD student in the ECE department at RICE University advised by Profs. Ashok Veeraraghavan and Guha Balakrishnan. Previously, I was a Senior Machine Learning Research Engineer at Samsung Research America working in computational imaging and photography. Before that, I did my masters in Computer Vision (MSCV) at the Robotics Institute, Carnegie Mellon University where I worked under Prof. Simon Lucey.

My vision is to work towards holistic AI integration in camera technology, explore newer forms of representing information, and work towards AI for health and sustainability.

My primary areas of interest are:

  • Large signal machine learning

  • Optics and computational imaging

  • Novel data representations

  • Digital health and medical imaging

At Samsung, I was a ML researcher for 3.5 years at the multidiscplinary Think Tank Team where I reported to Sajid Sadi and Rehmi Post. I led and developed a variety of projects in computer vision, smartphone photography, and machine learning. My work has been transformative and led to 10+ patents.
